Cancún Details

Cancún is located on a tiny elbow-shaped sandbar on the very eastern tip of Mexico’s coast, in the state of Quintana Roo. Just 20 years ago, it was a sleepy fishing village with a population of about 120. Today it is a bustling city with a population of half a million and a resort drawing nearly two million visitors a year. Modern hotels sprawl along its beaches. Activities include shopping, golf, and scuba diving.

The ship will anchor offshore, and we will be ferried to and from the island of Cancún. We haven't yet picked an itinerary for our time here, but we have several options:

  • Xcaret by Day (7 hours) - Spend a marvelous day at the very beautiful archeological theme park of Xcaret, "Natures Secret Paradise". The adventure begins as you take a one-hour journey in an air-conditioned colorful folkbus to Xcaret Park. Upon arrival an English speaking guide will instruct you as to where to go and what to do, then you are on your own to explore and experience the many attractions offered. Step back in time amongst the various Mayan Archaeological sites, float on the surface of an underground river for thirty minutes, an unbelievable experience. Enjoy a swim in the Caribbean Sea, lagoons, natural pools, channels and cenotes. Browse through a botanical garden and nursery, visit the wild bird-breeding aviary, butterfly pavilion, Jaguar Island and much more. You may also choose to share your time with friendly dolphins, or take a horseback ride along the ocean front.
  • Xcaret at Night (4 hours) - Mexico's roots and the mystical world of the Mayan culture come to life in the evenings at Xcaret Park. The beat of pre-Hispanic drums and candlelit paths take participants through a spell-binding labyrinth of caves, natural wells, ceremonial centers, and live dioramas, leading to an open-air theater and a colorful presentation of folklore dances. The setting is spectacular, the mood, enchanted, the evening not to be missed.
  • Cancún Nautibus (1 hour) - The Nautibus is unique catamaran, known as "the floating submarine". The hull is made of aluminum and both keels specially designed with large windows just beneath the waterline to give you full view of the underwater world. You will depart from Playa Tortugas and cruise along the coast of Isla Mujeres Bay where you will be able to view some of Cancún's most beautiful beaches. Then continue to the Chitales coral reef, which forms part of the second largest reef in the world after Australia. You will have a full view of the underwater world and be able to closely observe the sting coral, elk horn, brain coral, sea fans, sponges and many species of fish that populate the area. The Nautibus will then return to the Playa Tortugas.
  • Cancún Overview (4 hours) - This is a great way for first-time visitors to get acquainted with Cancún. From the pier, you'll travel along one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Visit the Mayan ruin site "El Rey" which means "King of the Solar Countenance". It is believed that this was the site of astronomical activities in the 2nd and 3rd century BC. As you return, you will stop at the Forum Mall, Cancún's newest shopping complex, where you can choose to shop or return to the ship.
  • Jeep Safari Adventure (4½ hours) - Leave the hustle and bustle of Cancún behind and explore the natural beauty of Quintana Roo while driving your own jeep. Your guided tour will depart caravan style and pass through the northern part of Cancún, Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam, legendary home of some of the best known pirates of the area like Red Beard. Turning off the paved main road you will appreciate your rugged 4wd jeep as you negotiate the bumpy road leading you to the secluded beach of the Pirate Morgan. Enjoy the white sands and turquoise waters of this beautiful beach as a fresh lunch of unique local dishes is prepared for you. You'll have time to take a swim, play some volleyball or do a little beachcombing before your caravan returns to the ship.
  • Sail to Isla Mujeres (3 hours) - This is a great combination of party and sailing aboard a 51' catamaran sailboat. You will sail through the bay between Cancún and the little island of Isla Mujeres. Your catamaran will bring you into one of the most beautiful beaches that Isla Mujeres has to offer. Swim, soak up some sun or do a little beach combing before sailing back to Cancún.
  • Dive In Boat Snorkel (3 hours) - Mexico has the second longest barrier reef just off shore and is know for it's colorful reef and crystal clear visibility. Your Dive In instructors have a great trip planned for you onboard the snorkel boat sailing to Isla Mujeres, whose name roughly translates to "island of women". This beautiful island is located about 40 minutes offshore from Cancún and offers some of the best snorkeling in the area. You will be given an orientation of the area before entering the water. Your Dive In instructors will take you on a guided tour and show you the incredible under sea world. Make sure you bring your underwater camera to get those once in a lifetime pictures.

Of course, we might also just do some exploring on our own.
